What are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic teeth that replace natural teeth and provide support to the cheeks and lips. They may be recommended in situations where a patient does not have enough healthy teeth left for other procedures. In such cases, the remaining teeth are removed and a full set of dentures is provided.
#Conventional dentures replace all teeth in the mouth. The process involves first removing all of the teeth, then waiting for the tissue to heal, and once healed, placing the full set of dentures. The time it takes for the tissue to heal varies anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, during which time the patient will go without teeth.
#Immediate full dentures are placed in one dental visit, so you never need to appear in public without a full set of teeth. The process includes first taking measurements of your mouth, then pulling the remaining teeth, and then immediately placing the dentures. The patient’s jawbone and mouth may shift in the healing process, so a follow-up visit is recommended to check the placement of the dentures. Over time, the dentures will need to be tightened as the patient’s mouth heals.
There are also #partial dentures, which are similar to a bridge but are removable.
How Long Will It Take to Adjust to Dentures?
Dentures take time to get used to. The flesh-coloured base of the dentures is placed over the tops of your gums, and some patients feel they get in the way or are a bit bulky. The dentures may feel loose at times, and thus may affect the way you talk or eat. Over time though, they become less of a nuisance, and you will feel comfortable with them.
